Mother and Daughter

I sat on the couch and had mommy sit in between my legs as I did her hair. We sat there laughing talking about different topics and people. I felt so much closer to her, we could discuss different topics and relate with each other on different topics in life. She gave me advice that I will hold dearly to my heart. At that point I was extremely happy she is my mother and I, her daughter. Moments like this make me enjoy the different stages of life. I remember eleven years ago, I would have been the one sitting between her legs getting my hair done but there would be no real conversation except me saying, "ouch" and her hushing me. As we grew older, that little moment got more intimate and it made me look forward to having a daughter.  The best part of your child’s life is not when they are cute and adorable and need you for everything. It is when you’ve watched him/her grow up into an admirable young adult, knowing all your sacrifices weren’t in vain and you ar...

Gloing Up

I remember when I was younger, I thought I had no personality or sense of style. Nothing that would make me stand out from those around me.   I had cousins who would occasionally visit and I felt happy when they came because they seemed so foreign, just the very air of them made me feel privileged to be in their presence. I admired them and wondered if I could ever be as pretty and as cool as them. As time passed by I grew to love myself and appreciate the little things that form who I am. I am beautiful and cool in my own way. I can’t remember when my mindset changed but I knew it didn’t happen overnight. Now when I see those cousins again I don’t feel inferior or that they’re better than me because I am no longer comparing them with myself; I am uniquely me and they are uniquely them. I do believe that what causes your glow up is not that you have discovered make up, lost some weight or now have some new clothes. But that you accept yourself for who you are an...

Self Image and Depression

Recently, I bought some makeup products with the intention of appearing as flawless as the girls I see on YouTube. I was so excited because I have never been an avid makeup user; I may add some pressed powder for medium coverage of my acne scars, some mascara and lip balm then I'd be ready to go. But this time I wanted to go full on with the concealer, foundation, highlight, eyebrow pencil, lipsticks, the whole works. I ended up spending a week's money in a day but it could only afford cheap drugstore products. No surprise, upon reaching home and trying these products I was not satisfied. I felt so disappointed when I realized that to achieve the look I was going for the foundation would cost me US$48. I was so sad because I do not have that type of money for just one thing on my list. Besides, that was what I spent on all the cheap products I bought, realizing that made me feel worse. Also, about two weeks ago I damaged my hair from flat ironing everyday for an entire we...
