13 Reasons Why You Should Stay Alive

Related image

I didn't want to watch '13 Reason Why' until my exams were finished, this was hard to do because everyone on social media was talking about it so I grew more and more curious. One day I was on hall with some friends and one of them asked if we had heard about the show, I was the only one who knew about it. The other two girls started asking questions wanting to know what it's about and before you know it we all grouped together watching episode 9 from her iPhone7.It was so interesting we couldn't stop watching, well I had to leave after episode 11 because I had an interview in a couple of hours, so I needed the sleep. My friends kept watching til episode 13 where the season ended.
Needless to say, I was hooked since that night. I needed to know all the reasons why Hannah killed herself and in two days I finished the series. For those of you just hearing about the show I'm going to give you a brief overview of what it's about (without any spoilers, I promise!). Hannah was a high school student, no older than seventeen; she committed suicide and left a number of cassettes, on these cassettes she made voice recordings telling the thirteen circumstances that led her to commit suicide. The cassettes were circulated among all those who were one of the reasons why she killed herself.  It was a really sad story, I bawled my eyes out. What I learned from it was that we should always treat others kindly because you never know what a person is going through and that your action or inaction may change someone's life for the worst. You might be the person who was hurt or mistreated, and that may make you feel worthless but try not to feel that way, know that you are loved. If you don't think anyone you know loves you, know that God loves you and love yourself, that alone is enough.
There are many reasons to stay alive so don't think this list is exhausted.

1. Growing up
Growing is a beautiful thing not just physically but mentally. As time goes by you'll experience the joy of life. There is a season for anything, sadness never last forever. Time is a great fixer. Think of something you went through that you didn't think you could survive.

2. Being in love
You probably haven't found the love of your life yet, someone who gives you goosebumps and butterflies, treats you like you're the most important person in the world and starts a brand new life with you. Being in love doesn't have to mean falling in love romantically. Children may also bring unimaginable happiness in your life

3. Discovering your purpose
Why were you blessed with the gift of life? What is it that God wants you to accomplish? How can you make the world better? Don't worry if you do not have the answer to these questions all the more reason for you to stay alive and start making your impact on the world today. If you know your purpose you should continue to fulfill it and be an inspiration to others.

4. Travel
There are so many places you haven't seen, so many things you haven't done. New cultures, new food, new people and a new environment. The possibilities are endless if you decide to travel the world.

5. Making other people happy
You know what sadness feels like, so be nice to strangers make them feel like their life is worth living. I guarantee that it will also make your life more fulfilling, to know you have touched someone.

6. Laughter
Laughter is truly the best medicine. It quickly makes you forget about your pain, giving you a lighthearted feel. A good joke can completely turn your day around.

7. Nature
Go and be one with nature. Visit a botanical garden, go on a beach trip, wake up early and go see the sunrise or wait until the sun sets. Stargazing is also fun, if you want more adventure mountain or rock climbing is a terrific idea. Rainy days are also beautiful especially when it ends with a rainbow (or two).

8. Christmas
There's just something about Christmas that makes it magical. The Christmas carols, the feeling of love in the air. One of my favourites is the decorations especially the lights. Just driving around and looking at the different decors at different houses, business or in the streets is a delightful feeling. There is also this feeling of love and happiness lingering in the air. The exchanging of gifts and being reminded of the greatest gift ever given, Jesus.

9. Food
I love eating! It's hard for me to have a favourite food because I keep discovering new delicious things. Whether it be fast food or some good home cooked meal I will not decline. If food was the only reason I should stay alive, I would try to live forever.

10. Buying things you like
Purchasing new items gives us immediate gratification. It can be clothes, gadgets, makeup, whatever it is that you like. You should treat yourself to things that you have been wanting for a while, you deserve it. It may even be services such as getting your hair done or a spa treatment.

11. New releases
Whether it be an amazing new movie you've just got to see, a new season of your favourite tv show, another album from your favourite artiste or if you're a book worm, there might just be a fantastic book about to be released; that's something you should stay alive to see.

12. Friends and Family
Stay alive because you have friends and family who love you and will miss you when you're gone. Losing a loved one is never easy, it is a difficult time for people who care about you, do not to intentionally cause them to grieve.

13.  You'll be glad you did
You won't regret deciding to stay alive, one day you will be content with who you are and where you are in life. Looking back you will realize you are more than your circumstance and nothing you went through was worth destroying your life over.

My Work and Travel Experience

The summer of 2017, I participated in the Summer Work and Travel Program. This program allowed me to work and live in the United States of America for a little over 3 months on a J1 Visa. The main aim of the program is to learn more about American culture by having first-hand experience through living amongst their people. However, this program turned out to be way better than what I had expected. I learned so much and had a wonderful experience that I intend to go back next summer. The company I worked with hired 9 students, four of us were from Jamaica, two from the Philippines, one from Kazakhstan and two from Ukraine. This program is described as a cultural exchange, between American culture and your own culture. But through this program I was learning about more than just the American culture. I shared a home with two Filipino girls, so their culture was one that I came in direct contact with. I loved learning new things from them and they were such amazing person...

Self Image and Depression

Recently, I bought some makeup products with the intention of appearing as flawless as the girls I see on YouTube. I was so excited because I have never been an avid makeup user; I may add some pressed powder for medium coverage of my acne scars, some mascara and lip balm then I'd be ready to go. But this time I wanted to go full on with the concealer, foundation, highlight, eyebrow pencil, lipsticks, the whole works. I ended up spending a week's money in a day but it could only afford cheap drugstore products. No surprise, upon reaching home and trying these products I was not satisfied. I felt so disappointed when I realized that to achieve the look I was going for the foundation would cost me US$48. I was so sad because I do not have that type of money for just one thing on my list. Besides, that was what I spent on all the cheap products I bought, realizing that made me feel worse. Also, about two weeks ago I damaged my hair from flat ironing everyday for an entire we...
